Last week, our class was on duty in the cafeteria for student self-management. On the first day, I was shocked to see so much leftover food thrown away by students. What a waste! Being concerned about it, my classmates and I had a heated discussion on how to solve the problem. Lots of good ideas came up, such as holding class meetings, putting up wall newspapers and charging a fine for wasting food. Finally, we all agreed that wall newspaper would be the best choice.
The next day, we put our idea into reality. Towards lunch time, we put up a wall newspaper outside the school cafeteria, calling on students not to waste food. Many students gathered around to read and expressed their support. To my great delight, there were changes soon. In the cafeteria, I found the trays returned after lunch all empty without any leftover. Food was saved and the dining hall was cleaner. Seeing this, I felt relieved and proud of what we had done.

You are discussing the following picture with your English friend Jim. Now you are telling him how
you understand the picture and what makes you think so.
As you can see, the girl is trying to reach an apple at the top of the tree. It’s so high that she has to stand on a stack of stools and may fall any time. Down at the lower part of the tree, there are many big apples within her reach. But she just ignores them. Isn’t it ridiculous?
I think the picture tries to tell us that we should set a proper goal for ourselves. If we ignore the readily attainable goals and choose one beyond our reach, we may fall and end up with nothing. In our daily life, there are many such “little girls”, who only aim at what is up high. Sometimes, they even take risks in getting the apple, the result of which is most probably only a fall. Actually, if we set a more realistic goal, we will not only get big apples, but also achieve confidence and happiness.

I received an email from my cousin Jack in Canada. He said he was enthusiastic about Chinese, and asked me to find him some books intended for Chinese beginners. I was very pleased to do such a favor. So I went from one bookstore to another, hoping to find something suitable for him. Finally I selected a set of Chinese textbooks among a variety of similar ones. Then I went to a post office to have them delivered by air without delay. Several days later, I received Jack’s email, saying that he really appreciated the books I had sent. I’m very glad that Jack is beginning to learn Chinese just like many other foreigners abroad, although I know it may be an enjoyable challenge for him. 125

the boat, looking quite content with himself. But it is the only fish in the basin. Obviously, he can’t get more. Compared with him, the other boy, who is fishing from the river, seems not to have tasted the fruits of victory, but he keeps calm and still works hard. We know there are a wide variety of fishes in the lake; if he holds on, he will sure catch more fish than the boy fixing his eyes on the only fish in the basin.
In reality, we should be a person with a grand vision. Put our mind to a better harvest and I think extra effort will pay us off in the end.

Last Saturday afternoon I went home with my friend Wang Wei. We were talking happily when a man riding a motorbike passed us quickly. To our great surprise, some 100-yuan notes dropped to the ground from the bag hanging on his motorbike. Hurriedly I shouted at the top of my voice to stop him. But he rode away without hearing me.
Seeing the notes scattered on the road, Wang Wei and I decided to pick up the money and wait for the man to come back. Some people seeing what had happened also helped to collect the money. A few minutes later, the man rode back, with sweet on his forehead. He was in a great panic when he saw many people picking up the money. He must have thought that we would go away with his hard-earned money. So when all of us returned the money to him he was so moved and relieved that he kept saying “thank you”. I was so happy that I could give a hand to the man who was in trouble. It was a really rewarding and fulfilling afternoon.

You are discussing the following picture with your English friend Jim. Now you are telling him how you understand the picture and what makes you think so.
Everyone has a dream. Just like the boy in the picture. He is climbing a ladder to reach the stars. Although the stars seem far too high for him to reach, the boy is still making great effort. Some people may laugh at the boy. But in my opinion, dreams are like the stars hanging high in the sky. Even though we may not reach them, we can look up and enjoy their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.
What’s more, in fulfilling our dreams, we may run into many difficulties. We should face them bravely and manage to find ways to solve the problems. Like the boy in the picture, we should find a ladder to success and move up step by step. The more difficulties we overcome, the closer we are to our dreams.
Dreams are the most valuable things we have in our life. They inspire us, they fire us up, and they make us work wonders. Fulfilling our dreams makes our life full and meaningful.

’s Park to enjoy ourselves. We took a taxi and it wasn’t long before we arrived at the gate of the park. On seeing the green trees and blooming flowers, Tim couldn’t wait to take pictures. It was at that moment that we found his camera was gone. He searched all over his backpack but just couldn’t find it. Suddenly it occurred to me that he might have left it in the taxi. With anxiety and hope, we found out the invoice of the taxi, on which a phone number was printed, so I immediately got in touch with the taxi company. About half an hour later, the driver returned with the camera and you could imagine the wide smile spreading across Tim’s face. Both of us were grateful to the driver, and Tim, in particular, insisted on taking a photo with him.
Tim and I enjoyed ourselves during the rest of the day, but it was that taxi driver who made our day.

You are discussing the following picture with your English friend Jim. Now you are telling him how you understand the picture and what makes you think so.
Jim, look at this interesting picture. I think it tries to convey that we need to look at things from different angles.
As we can see, the two kids are looking at the same number in the opposite direction and having an argument about whether the number is 6 or 9. They feel confused why the obvious truth seems invisible to the other. Similar arguments happen in our daily life when we observe things from our own points of view, just like the two kids in the picture. However, if we can exchange their angles, we may find the others’ “ridiculous” opinions also make sense.
Therefore, let’s learn to handle problems from different perspectives and appreciate others’ points. Do you agree, Jim?

The Spring Festival is drawing near. However, in our community, many migrant workers remain at their posts, far away from their families and hometowns. I decided to do something unusual when students were enjoying the start of the winter vacation. Early in the morning, I called several friends in our community together and had a heated discussion about what to do for the remaining migrant workers. After reaching an agreement, we took immediate action. At our invitation to my home, the cleaners and security guards in our community were greatly surprised. At this time of the traditional festival, making dumplings was our first choice. Sitting around the table, we made dumplings with them, talking about families and hometown respectively. During the dinner, my friend and I expressed our wholehearted thanks and best wishes to these lovely people. After dinner, we all gave good performances, singing and dancing joyfully.
Despite being away from home, migrant workers offer us good service, contributing greatly to the building of this city. Here, I’d like to say something to them — Happy Spring Festival, our family members!

You are discussing the following picture with your English friend Jim. Now you are telling him how you understand the picture and what makes you think so.
Jim, as you can see in the picture, a little boy is trying to walk in a pair of shoes extremely larger than the size of his feet. The sweet smiling on his face shows his excitement about getting his wish — trying big shoes to go faster. Obviously, his wish will come to nothing.
In my opinion, what the picture conveys is that we should find a proper way to fulfill our goals no matter what we do. The little boy curiously tries on the larger shoes, hoping to walk fast just like adults. But I don’t think it’s an easy job. Some people in our life do exactly the same as the boy. It’s definitely good to keep an open mind and have courage to try something new. However, we’d better seek more suitable ways instead of taking it for granted. Otherwise, we will get into troubles. To avoid such
problems, all we need to do is to adopt a proper and reasonable way, which will absolutely benefit us.
And how do you think about that, Jim?
