When I think about why I am inspired to give back , the easiest answer is that I’m a father of three of privileged children. When you are fortunate enough to be able to raise your kids the way you want, it’s impossible to be conscious of the fact that there are a lot of kids who don’t grow up in those circumstances. I never stop thinking about that. I think it’s just in every parent’s DNA to try to brighten the lives of children in any way you can.

As parents, our No.1 responsibility is to raise healthy children. But you’ve also got to raise good people. And good people are not just consumers ,they are givers.

I am proud that my kids don’t think of giving back as a chore. They never say, “Oh God,mum and dad are making us do this again.” They talk about service and wonder what they can do to help. It ’t just happen by osmosis. If you leave kids to their own devices, and to the materialistic images they see in pop culture, they may not get it. You have to set aside time each day、week、or year to communicate the values you want your children to have.

Make a Difference Day is a perfect opportunity for that. It’s one of the greatest ideas I have ever heard :a chance to change the world around us, to change the look of our communities, and to change our lives.

If you have time to volunteer next Saturday ,do it. If not, make the time. It will change you as well.

24、What can be learnt about the author’s children?

A. They regard giving back as a chore.

B. They feel forced to do well.

C. They are glad to help others.

D. They are born givers rather than consumers.

25、What does the underlined word in paragraph2 mean ?

A. To fix something into position so that it can be used.

B. To fill something or someone with a particular feeling, quality or idea.

C. To tell somebody to do something in a formal or official way.

D. To give somebody desire or confidence to do something.

26、We can infer that the author’s attitudes towards materialistic images kids see in pop culture ?

A.positive

B.favorable

C.supportive

D.negative

27、What does the author aim to do by writing the first three paragraphs?

A.He want other parents to learn from him.

B.He wishes other children to be givers rather than consumers as his kids.

C.He’d like to lead readers to be informed of Make a Difference Day.

D. He desires to do good as well.

Endangered giant pandas are facing a new threat: the loss of their food source, bamboo. In China’s Qinling Mountains, giant pandas spend most of their day eating bamboo. The plant makes up 99% of the panda’s diet, with some pandas eating about 40 pounds of it a day. But Qinling’s pandas may soon have to find another food source. A new study cause the loss of most of the region’s bamboo by the end of the century.

A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences studied the effects of climate change on the region’s three main bamboo species. They studied the influence of rising temperatures on the spread and growth of bamboo. Bamboo is sensitive to temperature changes. “Even with a 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit increase in temperature, we found that 80% to 100% of bamboo would be gone by the end of the century,” Liu Jianguo, one of the study’s authors said. Shirley Martin, who came from Paris but not involved in the team said that it’s really a demanding challenge for us to get a desired result.

The Qinling Mountains, located in eastern China, are home to about 270 pandas. That is about 17% of the world’s wild panda population. The panda is one of the world’s most endangered species.

In recent years, China has stepped up efforts to protect pandas. But Liu says the country has yet to consider the long-term efforts of climate change in its conservation planning. Aside from increasing nature reserve areas(保护区)where pandas are protected, Liu wants China to lower its use of fuels that release(释放)greenhouse gases-as should the rest of the world. “ The future of pandas,” he says, “ is in our hands.”

28.From the first paragraph we can know _____.

30.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Bamboo is sensitive to the changes of temperature.

Genetically modified (转基因的)foods have become a focus point of agriculture throughout the news today. This has an effect on many different aspects of the agriculture world. From the seed dealer,to the farmer that buys the seed,to the workers that the farmer sells to : all are affected by the new technologies that are involved in this part of production agriculture.

Genetically modified foods have come under heavy fire lately. There are some countries that are against buying these types of foods. They are being tested for safety by the best scientific experts in Europe, the US and the rest of the world-They are not for sale until they have gone through this complete safety process. Since they are a new product, and any slight problem with them could affect a whole country, these tests are very necessary.

These safety tests are carried out because of the new rules that were made with the Novel Foods Regulation. Begun in May of 1997,the Novel Foods Regulation set up an EU-wide pre-market system for all novel foods. A novel food is described as one that has not been eaten by EU consumers widely in the past. By setting up this program the EU hopes to keep its consumers safe from any possible side effects of any new food products.

There are a variety of ways in which genetic modification has helped food producers* They can improve the nutritional value or the storage conditions of the food. Today there are only two genetically modified foods that have been allowed for

use, these are GM soybean and GM maize.

Despite any safety checks, many people are still cautious about eating genetically modified foods. By providing these people with the necessary information, we can allow them to make decisions about these foods.

C. It's a new kind of food.

D. Its story has been published.

In a room there were four candles buming. The atmosphere was so soft that you could hear them talking.

The first one said, "I am PEACE,however, nobody can keep me lit.I believe l will go out. "Its flame rapidly weakens and goes out completely.

The second one says,"l am FAITH.I am no longer essentia.l,so it does not

make any sense that I stay lit any longer.“When it finished talking,a wind softly blew on it,putting it out.

Sadly, the third candle spoke in its tum* "I am LOVE.I have not got the

strength to stay lit. People put me aside and don't understand my importance. They even forget to love those who are nea.rest to them.”And waiting no longer,it goes out.

Suddenly a child entered the room and saw three candles not burning,”Why are you not burning? You are supposed to stay lit till the end.”Saying this, the child began to cry.

Then the fourth candle said,“Don't be afraid. While I am still burning,we

can re-light the other candles.I am HOPE.”With shining eyes, the child took the candle of Hope and lit the other candles.

Hope never abandons you. Don't follow your fears, but your hopes and

eilf the one ever appeared, anyone else would just be a compromise. But I don't want to compromise. " This line has become the talk of the town since TV

drama My Sunshin,e was first released on Jan 10.

Many fans follow the series because of all the pretty faces, especially cha:mung Tiffany Tang3 31, and the attractive PValla.ce Chung,40. However, the show' s success is al_so due to the tremendous fan base its original Web novel rS//en,t

Separatt:on, has accuruulated since 2003. The novel starteci a craze as soon as writer Gu Man published the first chapter online.

The story is about two sweethearts that separate and are given a second

chance. Zhao Mosheng and He Yichen fall in love in college but separate due to

misunderstandings. Seven years later, fate connects them together again. They work hard to clear their misunderstandings and,in the end, become happily mamed.

The TV drama attracts me not only because it stays true to the novel, but also because it describes rny ideal romance. Whether they admit it or not, every woman dreams of having a handsome man chase after them exclusively (寺一地). Well, He Yichen is just that. As one of the top lawyers iri China, he is attractive,

competent, sensible and rich. But after getting mamed, the seemingly cold lawyer gives Zhao a dream wedding, cooks for her, picks her up after work and protects her anytime she needs it-almost everything a dream husband should do.

Also, what makes the TV drama stand out among so many series is the love between the main couple is touching but not unr.ealistic. It is not only a fantasy or a daydream that takes the audience away but also an experience that can occur in our daily lives.

My Su.nshine is a success,at least for me. It maintains the beauty of the novel, adds attractive faces to create a feast ior the eyes, satisfies many girls' fantasies

about love, and most importandy, encourages all of us to seize every available

opport,unity to embrace happiness.

24. The underlined word in paragraph l is closest in meaning to "__".

A. a famous song B. a big hit

A. the actor and the actress all have the pretty faces

B.it not only stays true to the novel but also describes an ideal romance

C. it satisfies many girls' fantasies about love

D.it encourages all of us to seize every opportunity to embrace happiness

27. What is the author' s purpose of writing this text?

A. To give the writer' s view on the TV drama.

B. To teach us how to manage a happy mamage.

C. To recommend us to enjoy the TV drama.

D. To tell us a romantic love story.

Astronomers have discovered a new pink planet on the edge of our solai

system.

The small planet-given the, name 2012 VP 113 by scientists-is 80

times further from the Sun than Earth. The newly discovered planet of ice and rock is 280 miles in diameter(宜径) ancl is in a distant area of the solar system way

beyond Pluto once thought to contain no planets at all.

The object-named " VP" or " Biden" after the US Vice President-is only the second to be found in a mysterious area at the boundary between the solar system and outer space called the inner Oort Cloud.

Astronomers now believe there may be thousands of previously unknown

objects orbiting the Sun at this distance. And they believe that the pattern of the

new planet' s orbit suggests it is caused by the gravitational (驯f力 ) l[_)ull of a "Super Earth" that traces such a large orbit around the Sun that it has never been seen.

. ' Astronomer Scott Sheppard, who found the new planet with his colleague,

Chad Trujillo, said: "If you took a Super Earth and put it a few hundred

astronomical units out,the gravity could lead this new object into the orbit it has. " The traditional view of the solar system had been that of nine planets orbiting the Sun. This was challenged in the 1990s when scientists found Pluto is orbiting in a band of thousands of icy objects called the Kuiper Belt.

Beyond this belt, only one object, called Sedna, was thought to exist on its own. But the latest discovery suggests our solar svstem has a number of planets at its edge.

B.Astronomers have discovered a new pink planet on the edge of our solar

C. Astronomers prove the traditional view is wrong.

D. The latest d/scovery makes a big breakthrough in astronomy.

30. What can we know from the passage?
