Confucius (born Kong Qiu, styled Zhong Ni) was born in the village of Zou in the country of Lu in 551 B.C., a poor descendant of a deposed noble family. As a child, he held make-believe temple rituals; as a young adult, he quickly earned a reputation for fairness, politeness and love of learning, and he was reputed to be quite tall. He traveled extensively and studied at the imperial capital, Zhou, where he is said to have met and spoke with Lao Zi, the founder of Daoism.

Upon his return to Lu, he gained renown as a teacher, but when he was 35, Duke Zhao of Lu led his country to war, was routed and fled to the neighboring country of Qi; in the disorder following the battle, Confucius followed. Duke Zhao frequently came to him for advice, but upon counsel of one of his ministers, he decided against granting land to Confucius and gradually stopped seeking his counsel. When other nobles began plotting against Confucius' position, Duke Zhao refused to intervene, and Confucius returned to Lu. But conditions there were no better than before, and Confucius retired from public life to concentrate on teaching and studying.

At age 50, he was approached by the Baron of Qi to help defend against a rebellion, but he declined. He was later made a city magistrate by the new Duke of Lu, and under his administration the city flourished; he was promoted several times, eventually becoming Grand Secretary of Justice and, at age 56, Chief Minister of Lu. Neighboring countries began to worry that Lu would become too powerful, and they sent messengers with gifts and dancers to distract the duke during a sacrifice holiday. When the duke abandoned his duties to receive the messengers, Confucius resigned and left the country.

Confucius spent the next five years wandering China with his disciples, finding that his presence at royal courts was rarely tolerated for long before nobles would begin plotting to drive him out or have him killed. He was arrested once and jailed for five days, and at 62 he was pursued, along with his disciples, into the countryside by a band of soldiers sent by jealous nobles, until he was able to send a messenger to the sympathetic king of a nearby country, who sent his own soldiers to rescue them. Once again, Confucius was to be given land but was denied it upon counsel of another high minister. After further wanderings, he eventually returned to Lu at age 67. Although he was welcomed there and chose to remain, he was not offered public office again, nor did he seek it. Instead he spent the rest of his years teaching and, finally, writing. He died at 72.

Confucius

Confucius (551 B.C—479 B.C.) is one of the most famous Chinese people. As the founder of Confucianism1, his thought has exerted a deep influence on China and its people. But Confucius was not his real name. It was a courtesy title, a Latinized form of “Kong Fuzi”, meaning “Master Kong”. His family name was Kong and his given name, Qiu. And he styled himself Zhongni. He was born at Zouyi, the State of Lu2.

As one of the greatest thinkers and educators in the history of China, Confucius’ legacy lies in the following three aspects: Firstly, he compiled and preserved the literary works, The Six Classics, including Shi3, Shu4, Li5, Yue6, Yi 7 and Chun Qiu8 , which are regarded as the classics of Confucianism. The accomplishment makes a large impact on the succession and development of the traditional Chinese culture.

Secondly, Confucius built up a system of philosophical thoughts with Ren as its basic virtue. This virtue is the central theme of his Analects9. He considered Ren as the first and highest criterion of man’s behavior and the core of morality. Ren meant to “love other men”;to help others to be established when one wished to be established oneself; and help others to be

successful when one wished to be successful oneself. Confucius’ concept of Li refers to a set of ritual and musical systems, with the hierarchical system as its core. Ren and Li are complementary: Li is the exterior principle of Ren while Ren is Li’s intrinsic guiding power. To accomplish Ren, one must abide by Li, and Ren will be naturally generated in the process of practicing Li. Fundamentally, the purpose of Confucius’ Li is to restore the traditional rites of the Zhou Dynasty11.

Thirdly, Confucius established private schools, creating a scientific educational system.. Confucius also held the idea that everyone should be educated regardless of his social status. In educational practice, he created flexible teaching methods, promoting the combination of learning and thinking, learning and reviewing as well as teaching and learning. He emphasized on individualized and heuristic teaching . These ideas are still of great significance in practice today.

On Confucius College

After reform and opening up, China’s reputation and good image is valued by many counties. Understanding of Chinese culture has become the trend of the world. Only 7 years, Confucius College is global in scope, blossom everywhere.

Then what is the meaning of Confucius College opened in?

First, on the aspect of culture, dialogues between two different nations can strengthen their relations. However, at the same time, they can make those two nations distant or alienated from one another. The difference in language is the main cause that has made people of one nation to feel prejudice and bias towards other nations or culture. Confucius College plays an important role in the development of the

culture, and it is to encourage necessary contacts between Chinese culture and the local culture. Confucius College not only help people from

various countries to understand China better, but also it plays an essential role in the teaching of Chinese language in other countries.

Second, at the political level, Confucius College has greatly

enhanced the Chinese influence, promoted a deep knowledge of China and mutual exchanges, and promoted world peace and harmonious development.

Some people, especially foreigners, however, are against Confucious College. They insist that with an increasing number of confucious

College established, it is a potential threat to their own cultures, therefore, it is essential to prevent this trend.

From my perspective, Confucius College help act as a positive part in the interflow of culture and political. We should make good use of them to spread and enrich our own.

When Socrates Meets Confucius

Common people come to the world with nothing, and leave with nothing. Great people come to the world with nothing, but they’ll leave with endless possibilities. Socrates and Confucius are such great people. Assuming these two wise individuals with their regional thoughts deeply in mind meet one day, what kind of spectacle will happen on them or even in the two countries, especially in China?

Firstly, Chinese will gradually realize the importance of the establishment of the legal system. The Confucianism centered on morality. It emphasizes that morality is much more important than the law, which inversely causes the citizen’s law consciousness to be light. While the Socrates lived in a more law-based country, comparing to the virtue, he attached greater importance to the legislation. So, when Socrates meets Confucius, he will share his legal awareness with Confucius and finally blend it to the Chinese culture. Secondly, Chinese will deal with things in a more rational and scientific way. In ancient China, most people are superstitious. The Confucianism spread some kind of mysterious figure, such as the god and the fairy. So, many times when it came to something difficult to deal with or

explain to the civilians, the rulers may choose to advocate the illusory theology to comfort them. This kind of handling will only cover up the facts in short term. While Socrates’ thought is scientific, he may have an absolutely different way to deal with the same thing. Thus, when Socrates meets Confucius, as the days progressed, Chinese will be more rational and no longer depend on the so called god to bless for a good life, but try to work hard on their own.

Thirdly, Chinese culture will be more inclusive and exoteric in academic. The Confucianism is almost authoritarian in the ancient times, especially in the Qing dynasty, which limited the development of other schools. Whereas the Socrates treats the academic in a broader way, he recognizes the freedom of learning. Therefore, when Socrates meets Confucius, Chinese culture will develop in a more inclusive and exoteric way. Different thoughts will integrate and the Chinese culture will“sparking”.

In conclusion, if Socrates meets Confucius, great changes must have happened to China in the establishment of the legal system, the rational and scientific Chinese manners of dealing with things and the more inclusive and exoteric Chinese culture.

On the Celebrity名人 Spokesperson代言人

Currently, we could hardly live a single day without seeing a celebrity spokesperson promoting a product or a social campaign on TV, net or other media. This is an intensely极度地 强烈地 popular trend that we cannot fail to notice.

There is no doubt that the celebrity spokespeople could boost the sale of a product. A host of celebrity spokespersons, however, have emerged出现 as the marketing tool of some companies, even companies producing and selling fake假的 and inferior 次的 差的items. This kind of behavior has produced negative impacts on consumers and whole society, which should be severely criticized and penalized. Of course, as is known to all, everything has both bright and dark sides. Some stars’ endorsement赞同 支持 of social activities and public campaigns raises public awareness, giving rise to changes in public behavior. In this case, they serve as positive role models of the general public. To name only one case: 这里仅举1例Pu CX, a household家

喻户晓 figure, acting as the celebrity spokesman of the China AIDS Foundation, contributes greatly to the cause of AIDS prevention and cure in China.

Over the past couple of years, a variety of talent shows have emerged on TV channels across the nation, from Super Girls to Happy Boys and so forth. This type of entertainment program is

intensely popular, especially among young adults and has produced profound巨大的 impacts on their studies and life.

There are a couple of reasons behind the tide. To start with, young folks need role models to learn from. So many of them are crazy for contestants 参赛选手participating in these programs. This gives rise to the increasing emergence出现 露头 of these shows because TV networks naturally need to cater to young audiences. Plus, thanks to economic and political reforms carried out by the government, this crop一批 of young generation have more freedom and desire to express and showcase themselves. Therefore, a growing number of young people desire to get involved in these shows.

This is a divisive 制造分裂/看法不同topic. On my personal level, the talent show is a superb极佳的 means of relaxing and amusing and can hugely relieve our strains. As college students,

however, we could not afford to indulge in them and should be aware of the utmost importance of studies.

On the Food Security

Over the past couple of years, several cases of the food scandal have been disclosed on various media. The problem of food security has become a hot button across society. The prevalence流行 盛行 of food insecurity has greatly impacted public health, which the government could not afford to ignore, according to the online edition of the People Daily.

There are a couple of driving forces, I would argue, behind this undesirable tide. First, in the

course of the rapid economic evolution, we ignore moral education, giving rise to the rising rate of the problem. More importantly, the lack of adequate regulation and punishment on those illegal producers enforces the trend.

As Confucius 孔子instructed, it is better late than never. Prompt and strict measures should be taken to turn back this evil trend. The government should launch a massive moral campaign to educate all citizens and draw up tougher laws to crack down on those irresponsible corporations and prohibit them from entering the food industry again. I am firmly convinced that through our combined efforts we are bound to enjoy more risk-free foods in the days ahead.

On Uncivilized Behaviors

We cannot fail to notice that countless uncivilized behaviors exist in our daily lives, such as

spitting, talking loudly, littering, saying nasty words in public places and so forth. All these are bad manners that we should not lose sight of. As an ancient land enjoying a splendid civilization spanning over 5,000 years, China is witnessing a surge in improper acts that every Chinese citizen should feel ashamed of. Uncivilized behaviors by a host of Chinese both at home and abroad have seriously affected China’s image, according to an editorial posted on People Daily’s official website.

As Chinese, we should not get offended when others point out our weaknesses but should focus more attention on improving ourselves. We should strive to identify the causes of those improper behaviors and find ways to eliminate them. There are a host of causes, I would argue, behind this trend. To name only one: the lack of moral education. The government should wage开始 发动 a

massive moral campaign to fight against this trend and we ourselves should endeavor to behave decently in our daily lives. As college students of the new age, we should take the leading role.
