放孔明灯是傣族地区特有的活动。入夜,人们在广场空地上将灯烛点燃,放到自制的大“气球”内,利用热空气的浮力,把一盏盏“孔明灯”放飞上天,以此来纪念古代的圣贤孔明。泼水节期间还要进行划龙舟比赛。比赛在澜沧江上举行。一组组披红挂绿的龙舟在“堂堂堂”的锣声中和“嗨嗨嗨”的呼喊和哨子声中,劈波斩浪,奋勇向前,把成千上万的中外游客吸引到澜沧江边,为节日增添了许多紧张和欢乐的气氛。
这些活动一直延续至今,成为辞旧迎新祝福吉祥的节日,成为傣族人民最重要的节日。
